Player Interview: Inside the Mind of a Pro Builder
We sat down with Tom “RiftSmith” Ainsworth, a UK-based challenger player and coach for a top European academy team. Tom has over 8 years of competitive experience and is known for his innovative build paths.
“Most players underestimate the importance of the first 10 minutes. Your build isn’t just about the items you buy — it’s about the path you take to get there. I see so many people rushing a full item when a component would give them more immediate power.”
— Tom “RiftSmith” Ainsworth, Challenger Coach
Q: What’s the most common build mistake you see in solo queue?
Tom: “Ego building. People lock in a build from a guide they saw a week ago, without considering the current patch or their opponent. The best League of Legends builds are fluid. You need to read the game, not just a spreadsheet.”
Q: Any advice for players trying to climb?
Tom: “Focus on two champions per role and master their build variations. Learn when to go damage vs defence. And please — stop buying the same boots every game. Mercury Treads against CC is a game-changer.”
Q: How important is rune adaptation?
Tom: “It’s everything. I change my runes every single game. Even if it’s just switching between Bone Plating and Second Wind — that small edge wins you trades. If you’re using the same page for 10 games straight, you’re handicapping yourself.”
